The conditions that have made Cabarete a popular windsurfing location have also made it the top kitesurfing spot in the hemisphere. The trade winds are strengthened by a thermal that makes the wind in Cabarete Bay stronger than in other spots of the Caribbean.

Cabarete is a favored location for international kitesurfing competitions, including contests that combine kitesurfing with windsurfing and surfing.

Experienced kite surfers can launch from the beach in front of the hotel, but due to a reef below the surface, less experienced kiters launch from other spots just along the sands, where there is a wide selection of kite schools offering lessons and/or rentals.
Cabarete is one of the 10 best spots to windsurf in the world and there are well over half a dozen world class windsurfing schools with rental equipment along Cabarete Beach. The trade winds are strengthened by a thermal that makes the wind in Cabarete Bay stronger than in other spots of the Caribbean.

Cabarete Bay is ideal for both beginners and advanced windsurfers. The first 800 meters from shore is relatively flat water (ideal for free style and beginners) due to the protection from the reef. Further out, around the reef, waves can get up to 5 meters.  The biggest waves are in January.

The closest windsurfing center is about 300 meters down the beach from Hotel Alegria.
The world famous Encuentro surfing beach is located 5 kilometers west from the Hotel.
